WELCOME TO JANASAHAYOG
We are Mannina Makkalu Naavu
Thank you for visiting us. Your interest matters. Janasahayog is a registered Indian not-for-profit organisation rooted in urban slums. Since the 1990s, we have worked alongside urban deprived communities across Karnataka to claim dignity, rights, and a rightful place in the city.
Who are we and where do we come from?
We did not arrive as outsiders. We emerged from the slums as a community-based collective. We are true children of the soil, working from within the community to create lasting change.
What is our core Mission?
Our mission is to build leadership among urban deprived women and youth for their active, informed, and equitable participation in urban governance and to ensure their constitutional rights.
Which communities do we serve?
We work across 18 districts of Karnataka with historically marginalised groups—including Dalit, Adivasi, De-notified, Minority, LGBTQI+, and migrant communities living in unrecognised settlements.

Why We Work with Urban Deprived Communities
Understanding the challenges faced by the urban poor and why our intervention is necessary for social justice.
What is the current Urban Reality?
93% of India’s labour force is informal. A large share of urban India lives in slums and unrecognised settlements, often invisible to mainstream development.
Who are the people in these communities?
Communities largely come from historically marginalised groups — Dalit, Adivasi, De-notified, Minority, LGBTQI+, and migrants who have been historically excluded.
What are the daily struggles they face?
Daily life is marked by housing insecurity, lack of land titles, unstable work, poor civic services, and the constant risk of eviction.
Why is leadership and voice important?
Most urban poor are denied voice, organisation, and leadership, keeping them outside India’s growth story. We work to bring them into urban governance.
Our Core Pillars
The foundation of Janasahayog’s work is built on these five essential pillars that drive social change and community empowerment.

Organisation (Samuha)
Building strong, democratic community-based organisations to defend collective priorities.
Transparency & Public Accountability
Building trust through ethical governance, financial transparency, and accountable leadership.
